Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Santa Maria
After picking travelers up from 6:30 to 7.00 am. we leave to the sacred valley of the Incas, where we will go through picturesque villages and beautiful landscapes before we arrive at Ollantaytambo.  There we will have break and will continue traveling by bus for 1 hr. until reaching the mountain Abra Malaga near 11 am. (4350 mt.), from this area we will departure with the bikes (full suspensión, front/back hydraulic brake), descending 3 for hrs. We will go through rural villages, rivers, orchards and streams, reaching  the archaeological area of Huamanmarca at Approx. 1:30 pm.

 

1:30 pm. Later the private bus will take the group for 30 min. to the town Santa Maria, after a lunch and a short break, we will begin the adventure on rafting for 2 hrs., always accompanied by a professional safety kayak that will take care of passengers all the time. After that we will take you where you are going to spend the first night.

Day 2: Santa Maria – Santa Terasa
After enjoying an outdoor breakfast, we will walk along the riverbanks and start climbing for 30 min. Where we are going to walk around 45 min. Along the original inka trail, and on our way we will see small coffee plantations, fruit trees, etc. In this area it is possible to see many types of plants, orchids  and birds. We will  observe the beauties of the high forest which is a paradise of biodiversity in the Inka jungle route. After arriving to the top of the mountain we will see the whole valley of Urubamba

The group will desce nd for approx. 2.30 hr.  To arrive  at the village Qellomayo, here the lunch will be served. After a short break we will trek for 3 hrs. going through farms, rivers, waterfalls until arriving at the hot water springs in Santa Teresa. We will have a break and later the group will continue to walk for 40 min. until reaching the town Santa Teresa, where we will sleep at a comfortable lodge (private bathroom, hot water, Tv cable).

Day 3: Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes.
After a breakfast at 7 am we will continue to explore the roads less traveled. We will start form the town Santa Teresa. The passengers that reserved in advance will enjoy (hopefully) the zip line (later they will be taken by bus to the hydroelectric ),   the rest of the group will continue tohike for aprox. 3 hr.  until reaching the hydroelectric too, where the whole group will be rejoined.Here we will have a great lunch. 

After a short break, the journey will continue walking along the train road for 3 hr., until arriving at the town Aguas Calientes. The group will be taken to the hostel around 5 pm. At night we all get together in a restaurant to have a great dinner and have a briefing about the trek to Machu Picchu.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu – Cusco
The group will get up around 4 am. to go to Machu Picchu, following an ascending route through the high forest, we could have the chance to see thesunrise, after passing the control at the entrance around 6:00 am. The private guide will show us the sanctuary for aprox. 2 hrs, later the group will be free to enjoy Machu Picchu on their own. The passengers that reserved the hiking to Huayna Picchu will have their adventure for around 2.30  hrs. (including going up and down). The path is very steep at some points but it’s worth it. This trek is not recommended for people that suffer from dizziness.

In the afternoon the group have to descend walking to Aguas Calientes, to rest or to buy souvenirs until the hour of departure(9.30 pm.) of the train towards Ollantaytambo. You have to be 30 min. before departure where ourprivate bus will be waiting for all the travellers to be transferred to Cusco. We will arrive late at night, around 12.30 am

We will pick you up from the main square (Plaza de armas) at 9:00 am. In this tour we will take you to the Sacred Valley, taking the P’isaq route. Where you are going to visit the colonial town of P’isaq, in which is a indigenous and traditional market, a convenient place to buy handicrafts and souvenirs. After this we will head to the archaeological site that is beautifully carved in the highest mountains.   About Salkantay Trek

According to investigations, the name would have many meanings, (Salkan quey – Salkan pay) Quechua word which means (wild mountain).
This tour lasts between four to five days, where you will see impressive landscapes, ascending to the highest point, which is the Salkantay pass (6430 masl) where you will have a impressive view of the snow-capped mountains (Salkantay), descending until arriving to the lowest point know as LA CEJA DE SELVA “Eyebrow of the Jungle” (Santa Teresa town 1500 masl), ending at the stunning Machu Picchu (2425 masl).
According to Peruvian geography the snow-capped mountain (Salkantay) is located at an altitude of (6271 masl), located in the mountain range of vilcabamba, considered the second highest of Cusco after the Ausangate (6372 masl) mountain range of Vilcanota.
Since ancient times the snow-capped mountain (Salkantay) was regarded as a god, named Apu (Quechua word) which means (god or deity) and today it is still keeping this CUSTOM by local people, as well as by all travelers, leaving mounds of stones as a small offering in respect to this wonderful snow.

Itinerary

FIRST SALKANTAY TREK DAY : MOLLEPATA TREK – SORAYPAMPA

Newland-Expeditions-Salkantay-Trek-5d-4n-000We pick you up from your  4:30 a.m. to drive for about 3 hours to Mollepata where we start our Salkantay trek . As soon as we are at Mollepata while you have breakfast the cook and the horseman will pack all the camping equipment and cooking stuff and we start hiking the first 3 hours will be a little bit uphill to get Cruzpata where we will have lunch with panoramic views of beautiful snow-capped mountains (Humantay; 4120m/13500ft and Salkantay; 6271m/20575ft) – just the start! We will begin our Salkantay trek towards Soraypampa, our first Salkantay Trek camping spot (3800 m/11750ft; the highest and coldest campsite of the trip) we will be very close to the second highest Salkantay snow capped -mountain of Cusco. And if you want to vicit the lake of Humantay you can do it but it’s just up to you.

It’s about 1:20 m walking up from Soraypampa to Humantay lake 4200 m avoid sea level.

1ST DAY:Total distance: 15 km (approx.)

SECOND SALKANTAY TREK DAY: SORAYPAMPA -CHAULLAY OR COLLPAPAMPA (MIGHTY SALKANTAY)

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 4d/3n Newland ExpeditionsAfter having our Salkantay Trek breakfast we start walking about 5:30 am ,because this day will be the longest day the first 4 hours is uphill to get the highest point of the Salkantay Trek (4650m/15200ft) located halfway between 2 huge mountains; Salkantay on the right and Tucarhuay on the left. From the pass, the views of the 2 snow-capped mountains are incredible. There is a possibility of snow here.
After a rest, we will continue our walk (downhill) through a dramatic cloud forest towards Huayracpunku, where we will have lunch. We hike again after lunch in the direction of the start of the jungle until we reach our second Salkantay Trek camping spot of chaullay or Colcapampa (3000m/9800ft).

2ND DAY:Total distance: 19 km (aprox.)
Estimated walking time: 8 – 9 hours
Maximum altitude point: 4,650 m (aprox.)
Campsite altitude: 2,750 m (aprox.)

THIRD SALKANTAY TREK DAY: CHAULLAY – LA PLAYA – SAHUAYACO (CLOUD FOREST)

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 4d/3n Newland ExpeditionsAfter breakfast, at 6.30am, we start walking through the upper jungle crossing the Lluskamayo River and a variety of little brooks to reach La Playa walking about 6 hours. Today we will pass through valleys and have wonderful views of waterfalls, tropical fruits ,plants and as soon as we are at la playa place horses will go back to Mollepata on taking the same Salkantay Trek .so we camp at la Playa Sahuayaco

FOURTH SALKANTAY TREK DAY: LLACTAPATA – HYDROELECTRIC TRAIN STATION – AGUAS CALIENTES

We walk up on a original Inca Trail about 2:30 and half to Llactapata site where you will get a chance to see Machupicchu far away (one of the most beautiful place to see Machupicchu)  then We continue walking down 2.30 and half passing a variety of crop plantations, coca, banana etc. until we reach the hydroelectric station. And after the lunch we keep walking about 2:30 and half hours along the train road till reaching Aguas Calientes town where we will spend the night in a hostel.
In Aguas Calientes, you can take advantage of the thermal springs in the town (entrance 10 soles) a real treat after finishing the Salkantay Trek

4TH DAY:Total distance: 12 km (approx.)

FIFTH SALKANTAY TREK DAY: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU!!!

Newland-Expeditions-Salkantay-Trek-5d-4n-02Salkantay trek important day ,We wake up early morning about 4 am to then to 4:30 to have the breakfast and leave to walk up to Machu Picchu which takes one and half hours up to Machu Picchu but there is another option to catch the first bus which leaves 5:30 to Machu Picchu (25-minutes long) in order to appreciate the magnificent city as the sun is rising.
A walking tour (approximately 2 hours) is given by your Guide and after this you can explore the mysterious city by yourselves. If you still have energy you can also climb Huaynapicchu (2720m/8890ft)!!! It takes 45 minutes to reach the top.and after enjoying Machu Picchu you have to go down to aguas calientes to take the train back to Ollantaytambo and then bus back Cusco.

5TH DAY:Total distance: 4 km (aprox.)

DAY 1 : MOLLEPATA TREK – SORAYPAMPA

We pick you up from your hotel at 4:30 a.m. to drive for about three hours to Mollepata where we start our Salkantay Trek. As soon as we are at Mollepata you will have breakfast, ands while are eating, the cook and the horseman will pack all the camping equipment and cooking stuff and we start hiking. The first three hours will be a little bit uphill to get to Cruzpata, where we will have lunch with panoramic views of beautiful snow-capped mountains (Humantay; 4120m/13500ft and Salkantay; 6271m/20575ft). And this is just the start! We will begin our Salkantay Trek to Soraypampa, our first Salkantay Trek camping spot (with 3800 m./11750ft the highest and coldest campsite of the trip). We will be very close to the second highest Salkantay snow capped -mountain of Cusco.

DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA -CHAULLAY OR COLLPAPAMPA (MIGHTY SALKANTAY)

After having our breakfast we start walking around 5:30 am. This day will be the longest day. The first three hours are uphill to get the highest point of the Salkantay Trek (4650m/15200ft), located halfway between 2 huge mountains; Salkantay on the right and Tucarhuay on the left. From the pass, the views of the 2 snow-capped mountains are incredible. There is a possibility that it contains snow.

After a rest, we will continue our walk downhill through an impressive cloud forest to Huayracpunku, where we will have lunch. After lunch, we hike again in the direction of the start of the jungle, until we reach our second camping spot of Chaullay or Colcapampa (3000m/9800ft).

2ND DAY:
Total distance: 19 km (aprox.)
Estimated walking time: 8 – 9 hours

DAY 3: CHAULLAY – LA PLAYA – SAHUAYACO (CLOUD FOREST)

After breakfast, at 6.30am, we start walking through the upper jungle crossing the Lluskamayo River and a variety of little brooks to reach La Playa. We will be walking about six hours. Today we will pass through valleys and have wonderful views of waterfalls, tropical fruits ,plants, and as soon as we are at La Playa, we ride by horse, back to Mollepata, taking the same Salkantay Trek. After having lunch here, we take a local car to get Hydroelectric station to start walking two more hours by taking the railroad to Aguas Calientes.

3RD DAY:

DAY 4: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU!!

This is the most important day of the Salkantay Trek. We wake up early in the morning around 4:00 am and have breakfast at 4:30. We leave after breakfast to walk up to Machu Picchu, which takes one and a half hour. Another option is to catch the first bus, which leaves at  5:30 am to Machu Picchu (25-minutes ride). In both situations, walking or taking the bus, you will be able to see the magnificent city as the sun is rising.

A walking tour (of approximately two hours) is given by your guide. After this tour you can explore the mysterious city by yourself. If you still have energy, you can climb Huaynapicchu (2720m/8890ft!!). It takes 45 minutes to reach the top. After enjoying Machu Picchu, we have to go down (walking or by bus) to Aguas Calientes to take the train back to Ollantaytambo and the bus back Cusco.

4TH DAY:
Total distance: 4 km (aprox.)

Between 9.30 and 10AM. we will pick you up at your hotel and then you’ll head towards Ollantaytambo to get the train to the town of Aguas Calientes 2,000 m, the departure is at 12.58 pm. and lasts around 2 hours. Along the way you will enjoy of beautiful landscapes. Upon the arrival, we will transfer you to the hostel. In the afternoon you will have some free time to go to the hot springs or just to wander around town which is located next to the Urubamba river.

As well as you can visit the Machu Picchu ‘Manuel Chávez Ballón’ museum and orchid exhibition ($5 or 20 soles). This is open from 9am to 4.30pm and is a 35 minute walk down the road to Puente Ruinas. It is a very illustrative museum that gives an interesting introduction to Machu Picchu. (It’s worth it!)

DAY 2: AGUAS

CALIENTES – MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO

Early in the morning after breakfast we will start a nice trek of approx. 1 hr. way up through the high forest to reach Machu Picchu or as an option we could take the bus at an extra fee (USD$ 24 up and down).

Once at the entrance we have to show our passport and the entrance fee, after that our guide will lead us for aprox. 2. hrs. Showing us the most important monuments like the Royal Quarters, the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun clock, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Temple of the Condor and many more. Later you will have some free time to explore the area on your own.

As long as that you had booked your ticket for Huayna Picchu (the mountain behind Machu Picchu). you can climb. It takes 45 minutes to reach the top and the Newland-Expeditions-Huayna-Picchu - copia - copiaview from the top over Machu Picchu is worth it. (There is a limit of 400 people who are permitted to climb this, so if you want to do it, it is good to go immediately after your tour.) From the top of this mountain you can also walk down to the Moon Temple (a cave). It takes 45 more minutes to get there and from there, a further hour walk to get back to Machu Picchu itself.

Later in the afternoon you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, having in mind that the train back to Ollantaytambo departurs at 9.50 pm. Remember to be at the train station at least 30 min. before departure. In Ollantaytambo our private bus will pick you up to take you back to Cusco. Our journey will end at Plaza de Armas in Cusco
